Now that we got the stinkers out of the way, here are my Best Films of this past year that I paid to see and gladly. Heck I'd have paid for a second and third viewing and I am one broke-ass bitch most of the time. Here they are in no particular order...

2011 In Review: Mel's Worst Films

It's that time of year when we lay out the lists of Bests and Worsts. Here is a list of the films I watched, er, suffered through and consider the stinkers of this year. If you've seen them, my condolences, if not thank the Universe that others took that blow to the cranium for you.

Here they are in no particular order...

RIP Andy Whitfield

Some sad news to report. For those of us who loved the Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Andy Whitfield, the sexy title character, lost his battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma Sunday. He was just 39 years old.

A relative unknown prior to being cast, Andy appeared in all 13 episodes of the wildly successful first season as the Thracian slave. It was a huge success for the Starz network and caused a lot of talk with its graphic violence and sexual situations.

WarGames Gets Reboot

"Shall we play a game?" Those words proved to be the world's most terrifying syllables in the visionary 1983 movie WarGames. As teen hackers David and Jennifer, Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy found a back door into a military computer program thinking only to play games. What they found nearly launched WWIII. The film was directed by John Badham of Saturday Night Fever fame and co-starred Dabney Coleman, Barry Corbin and John Wood.

Abduction First Trailer, Tom Hanks News

Taylor Lautner hits the bigs in his post-Twilight career with the high octane thriller, Abduction, from director John Singleton. Lautner takes on his first solo lead role as Nathan, a young man who uncovers a terrible secret about his birth when he finds his baby photo on a missing persons website. Co-starring Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver and Alfred Molina, Abduction will hit theaters September 23. It looks exciting, sort of a twist on The Bourne Identity.

Novels Coming to the Big Screen

As an author, I am very excited about 2011 so far and where it seems to be headed. This is definitely one helluva year for novels. I mean, Harry Potter, the Twilight gang and Stieg Larsson aside, many popular books are receiving film treatments. This is most refreshing in light of all the remakes, reboots and sequels Hollywood has been churning out with all of the forethought of a greedy kid in a toy store. Now, I like a good reboot or a sequel just as much as the next fan, but I also love original material, especially when there are so many great books out there from which to choose.

It has now been 7 years since Jeepers Creepers 2 and talks of a third instalment have been rumoured since JP2’s release in 2003.
