October Updates: Superman Reboot, Dark Knight Sequel and Scream 4!

Below are updates to my previous posts with new gossip on the Superman Reboot, the Dark Knight sequel and Scream 4

Superman: Man Of Steel

New Superman Director Zack Snyder
What was once expected to be Jonathan Nolan’s directional debut, the Superman movie reboot has Zack Snyder, director of Watchmen and 300, now confirmed as helming the project. He was Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan’s (who is godfathering/producing the movie) top choice for the upcoming massively anticipated project and was originally attached to Superman Returns before Bryan Singer took over. Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer are writing the script to which Zack Snyder had apparently immediately fallen in love with.

Zack told www.Deadline.com "I've been a big fan of the character for a long time, he's definitely the king of all superheroes, he's the one. :
"It's early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I've always felt he was kind of awesome. I'll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it."

Terrance Stamp as Zod
Other reports suggest that he will be using General Zod as the main antagonist for Superman, the character played by Terrance Stamp in the original Superman movies 1&2. And Natalie Portman (upcoming Black Swan) is rumoured to play love interest Lois Lane. Now this rumour has been flying about for some time now, and looks to be sticking, and although not confirmed, it is an interesting choice.

Natalie Portman as Lois Lane?

Tentatively titled “The Man Of Steel’, shooting is due to start in May next year for a release date in December 2012 (the title and release date will no doubt change at some point).
*Update 13/10/2010 Zack Snyder himself has confirmed that General Zod is just a rumour at this point and thats it! A scoop at BadTaste confirms.

There is still no confirmation on who will play ‘Supes’, Jon Hamm who had been the most recent rumour has stated that he is not running for the role, although he would have liked it, and added that he was a little to old to play the part. So that said, it’s still wide open for who will fill those red boots.

Untitled Dark Knight Sequel

Although it’s no surprise, Christopher Nolan has officially Signed on to direct the Dark Knight Sequel. Still tight lipped as ever, he does not state much about the films premise, other than it will end his story and take on his vision of Batman.

He faces the daunting task of finding a villain that can create as much chaos as the Joker did played by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, to which he has confirmed he will not recast. He also has confirmed that the villain definitely WON’T be Mr Freeze.

Also recent reports suggest that the third movie will be in 3D! Christopher Nolan is not a big fan of 3D, but Warner Brothers seem to be pushing him towards it. Nolan, being Warner Brothers own Dark Knight will no doubt get his way whatever he chooses, personally I hope he opts out of the format.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt the Riddler?
Shooting will begin next may, for a confirmed release date of July 20th 2012. Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Kane are all expected to officially sign on to reprise their roles anytime now, and the only rumour that seems to gain momentum all the time is that the main villain will be the Riddler and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be the guy for the role.

Scream 4: New Decade New Rules

Neve Campbell on Set
Scream 4 has now rapped up filming, and Wes Craven now seems intent on promoting the ass off it. Wes has continuesly updated his Twitter account with news on the project and even offered Canada’s Entertainment Tonight show a sneak peek at its on set footage (which you can view below plus new set pics). Casting seemed a long drawn out process at first, with new members only added several weeks ago, even Neve Campbell said no in the beginning!

The fourth instalment reunites Scream veterans Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox- Arquette and David Arquette 10 years after the third one ended, and Although rumours suggested that Neve Campbell who plays Sydney Prescott, a now successful author of her own book, would only have a small role in the movie, even rumoured as the opening kill scene, now seems to have more of a part than anyone thought, news which is pleasantly recieved by Scream fans. The movie will also introduce a lot of new characters which are intended to carry on the franchise for a further two films, you can now see all the official cast on the IMDb  website which include Adam Brody, Hayden Panettierre, Rory Culkin and Anthony Anderson.

Other rumours suggested that Mathew Lillard, who played the original killer in Scream was back in the franchise after he was spotted dining with Neve Campbell close to the movie set.
Wes Craven confirmed that he is just a great friend of Neve’s, and was filming a movie himself in the same area and the rumours of him returning are false, which would seem likely as his character was killed in the original Scream. The same thing goes for Jamie Kennedy’s character of Randy Meeks, he will also not be returning from the dead, writer Kevin Williamson does not want to cheat any of the previous instalments by bringing a character back who has been killed off, ‘were not that kind of movie’ he states on Fearnet.com

Fresh images from the set are spreading on the web fast, and this movie will be released April 15th 2011 (USA).

I'm pretty excited they're bringing back Zod. He and his posse were a delectably sinister triumvirate. I am not too sure I'd like Superman to be a "dark character". That was never Superman's persona (not even during the days when he "died"). But then it really depends on the execution. Might work.

LOL @ "fresh meat". Never would make a very interesting opener a la Drew Barrymore, don't you think? If they want sequels to the new Scream, they would have to infuse "non-disposable" new blood, I think, though I like Neve.

It's a shame Hamm's out of the running for Superman, he would have been awesome. Zod will be a great villain, although I was hoping for Brainiac. Still, early days, who knows what will be announced?

I really wanted Braniac too, but Zod is only rumoured so theres still room for change. Hamm, well at first I was dead agaisnt him playing it (previous superman post), I thought he was just too old. Then when I watched the Town this weekend, I have to say I could really see him in that suit and thought he could do it well! It changed my mind. But I still say the age is/was a huge problem, if this movie is to carry out over a trilogy say he would just be too old for the part with the gap between sequels.

Im surprisingly looking forward to the new Scream. I hope they don't kill off Hayde. But curious to see what they do with it. Of course, waiting ever so patiently for the next Batman.

Zod is back?
I eagerly waiting to see that. Thanks for the update about Siperman and Batman movies. But I don't think Natalie Portman is suitable to be Lois Lane. Maybe I just don't like her but it still just a rumour, right?

I am looking forward to see what Snyder and his visual style will do to a new Superman franchise. Brainiac or Zod? I'm good with either, but in an attempt to move forward from the older flicks, Brainiac might be the way to go.

I'd love to see a darker turn with Superman. Being an anti-hero fan myself, I would love to see a Superman who deals with issues and conscience and vice like Tom Welling's Clark Kent. Maybe amp it up, not as dark as Batman, but definitely not as shiny as Brandon Routh or even Dean Cain.

Natalie Portman would be huge step up from the dreadful Kate Bosworth. Of course, I grew up with Margot Kidder as Lois and later, Terri Hatcher, so Kate was like watching a paper Barbie doll in comparison.

I vote for Brainiac as the villain. Loved Zod, but it would be great to see a villain that hasn't been done on the big screen.

I'm really glad that both Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy's characters on "Scream" will remain dead. To make it seem otherwise would take away the credibility of the previous deaths of the franchise and the fact that any main character could die in this one.

aw, dark knight doesn't feel like dark knight without heath ledger. but i am looking forward to superman, especially having natalie as lois! that seemed interesting to catch!

Snyder is one of the most talented directors in film industry and a visual genius. I'm excited about all of his projects, and that includes "Superman"

I'm a huge horror geek, but never been a fan of Scream franchise. I found it overrated.

Melissa, while it may not get Dark Knight dark, I think it's a safe bet to wager that the newest Superman won't be Christopher Reeve (RIP) light. I have to say, though, I always loved Terence Stamp's Zod. He was my favourite bad guy after Schwarzenegger's Terminator (first one of course).

Thanks for the updates, Dempsey.

Jonathan, I know what you mean about Zod. Terence Stamp was brilliant and he does rank high on my list of all time fave villains.

Re: Cathy P
Superman being dark is a thing I'm not to sure they can get away with on this DC character, hopefully his alter ego will just be more of a dynamic reporter than a clutz, and thats as dark as it gets. Great comment, thank you.

Re:Paul C
Love Zod too, but wish they would tease him first like they did with Joker in Batman Begins and have a villain we havn't seen on the big screen yet like Braniac as you say. Thanks again for your comment.

Re: Jodie McBride
A special than you for a comment that made me grin like a cheshire cat, you have mail!

Re: Zezebel
Yep still just a rumour at present. I do think she might actually shine in this role, but until she is signed on its anyones game.

Re: Geoff
Completely agree!

Re: Melissa Bradley
Interesting comment and one of few saying they would like to see a darker Superman. The iconic DC character is hard to turn dark I think as he's a beacon of hope for all mankind, however they could do a dark turn with him as once exposed to Red Kryptonite, something they extremely messed up with Christopher Reeves Superman 3 (the Kryptonite was white) turns Superman bad. It's possible. Again interesting comment, thank you.

Re: Moonwalker
Yes it would definetly be a shame to go against the previous Scream movies with cheap tricks. I'm glad they opted out.

Re: Jonathan & Melissa
Love your convo on the Zod front. Terrence Stamp had played that part ultra cool with great effect, I loved that zod. Who would you recommend playing him now though?

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS, VERY INTERESTING AND LOVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MOVIES. So you all know, TheMovie411 blog awards are now up, details on how to enter can be found at the top of the home page tab under movie411 awards 2010, I invite you all to enter and nominate.

Previous rumors even have Killer Croc as Batman's next villain but I don't think it necessary or fitted to Nolan's version of Gotham. Anyway, I'm still rooting for Selina Kyle aka Catwoman to finally make appearance in this sequel.
