Hollywood is in remake heaven lately, and 2010 seems to be getting its fair share.
Karate Kid, Nightmare on Elm street, The Crazies, and The Wolfman to name a few.
Piranha is the latest movie to get a reboot/remake, coming to you in what moviemakers just seem to love these days...3D!
Now me personally, I hate 3D, gives me a huge headache, and I don't enjoy sitting in front of a movie looking like something out of spy kids, but I’ll go along with it.
Lake Victoria, a population of a mere 5000 residents becomes a spring break haven for thousands of students looking for a little more than drinks and an orgy in the water, and this year their gonna get it!
After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must help each other from becoming fish food from these razor-toothed monsters.
Directed by: Alexandre Aja
Starring Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Elisabeth Shue, Jerry OConnell, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, and Kelly Brook.
A headache later and now looking a bit more respectable (the 3D specs given straight back to the usher) I have to say I quite enjoyed it!
The key is here, don't expect a masterpiece, a Jaws 'wannabe' maybe, but even that dodgy robotic shark still holds the king of water terror to these little critters!
That aside, the film delivers exactly what it says on the tin, fun, gore, a few scares for the jumpy, comedy, half decent story, thousands of wagging tits for the boys and more than enough biceps to keep the girls ogling for a short while.
The acting is shady in areas but definitely lives up to the over glorified B-movie this was set out to be.
What may excite you a little more is that Richard Dreyfuss's character - Matt Hooper from Jaws seems to have crossed-over to this movie, I say 'seems' as the credits bill him as Matt Boyd, but his character name is never mentioned in the movie, he dresses in the same attire as he does in Jaws, and if that isn’t enough to convince you its Mr Hooper, he sings 'show me the way to go home' just like he did in Jaws! How Sneaky.....love it!!!
The special affects are....well 'special', and overall I would say it was so cheesy you got to love it!
Probably worth an Orange Wednesday BOGOFF deal at the cinema if your going to split the cost with a friend.
