Spider-Man reboot......Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans CONFIRMED!

Emma Stone Confirmed as Gwen Stacy
It was recently announced that Emma Stone of Superbad fame (who can also currently be seen in Easy A), has been cast in the role of Gwen Stacy in the new Spider-Man reboot. Stone will play alongside newcomer Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), who fills the shoe's of Peter Parker. True to the comics, Stone will be sporting blond hair for the role, as opposed to her usual red. Some may be asking, "What about Mary Jane?", and this is exactly why I am excited about this film. We can glean quite a bit about the plot of the film simply because the leading female character is Gwen Stacy!

The 411:

Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man

Many who have never read the comics but enjoy the Spider-Man films may not know who Gwen Stacy is, or her role in the history of Spider-Man. There are currently two canons of Spider-Man lore that we can reference, The Amazing Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man, the original comic, portrays Gwen as Peter Parker's college love before Mary Jane Watson. They meet in graduate school at Empire State University, but their relationship is quite rocky due to several unfortunate encounters with Gwen's father.

Rhys Ifans Cast as Villian?
If this is the canon the film will follow, we can expect the same villains we have seen in the previous films. These would include both Dr. Octopus, and the Green Goblin. It was recently announced that Rhys Ifans is cast as the main villain of the film, further alluding to a villain of small stature.
In my opinion, reusing past villains so early in the reboot would be redundant, and I believe audiences are thirsty for something new in the way of on screen super villains. We can expect Gwen to die at the end of the film either way. The circumstances of her death in this canon would add much to the character development of Garfield's Spider-Man, but fans of Emma Stone may be upset if she only makes a one film appearance.

The other option the studio has, if they plan to follow the comics at all, would be to develop the film with the Ultimate Spider-Man canon in mind. In this iteration, we would most likely start with Peter and Gwen in High School, and I believe both Garfield and Stone look young enough to pull this off. Gwen is a fellow classmate of Peter's and a love triangle would form between Mary Jane, Gwen, and Peter. We would most likely see a large amount of romantic drama coupled with an origin story and most likely a minor, yet new, villain. Some of the larger rumours afoot over the past few months have been pointing toward the Vulture or Electro, and it is possible Rhys Ifans can populate these roles as well. What excites me most about the ‘Ultimate’ canon and the path the film may follow is the role of Gwen Stacey. In ‘Ultimate‘, Gwen does eventually die, however she later transforms into the symbiotic serial killer Carnage. If the films take this route, it is quite possible to keep Stone for future films in what would be a surprising role as the arch villain. Not to mention the fact that Carnage is one of my favourite comic book villains, and I believe the character is deserving of some screen time.

Of course it is possible that the film will not follow any of these story arcs. Even if they do, it will surely be raped and diluted into a mess that resembles nothing of the comics, but at least we have hope. If you had your choice, what fate would you choose for Gwen? What villains would you like to see in the Spider-Man reboot?

Great Post Levi, really enjoyed reading this.

Thanks. The Rhys Ifans story broke literally the second I finished the first draft.

I agree, great post. I was looking forward to Emma being cast as Mary Jane, to them making MJ tougher. I don't really like the idea of them going back to high school, though. It is Spider-Man and not Spider Boy. And I admit, I'd like to see a villain other than Green Goblin.

I personally think if they are going to reuse any villians, it should Venom. As Spider-Man's worse enemy, he deserves his own movie. Combining some fear and thriller aspects that could come along with Venom with the triangle romance could really make for something entertaining. I'm just saying.

I actually agrre with Franchisesaysso on that one. Its what ruined Spiderman 3! Venom is such a great villian, and they just rushed the hell out of it in number 3 with trying to include so much. I would love to see Venom done properly., and I think it would kick off the reboot well.

I agree with @FranchiseSaysSo as well, but if Venom is the role they plan to fill with scrawny Rhys Ifans, they may as well have called Topher Grace back. It's hard to tell, Rhys is a bit old, but that still leaves Vulture, Electro, and Goblin as possible roles. Mysterio is another possiblity, but that is a character that deserves full focus for the duration of the film, and I have a feeling they will want to throw a lot into this first reboot film.

Oh, I love Emma! She's definitely a better pick than former Spidy girl, Kristen Dunst.

I'm not entirely sure that a Spider-man reboot is necessary though.

I thought Emma matches Mary Jane Watson more than Gwen Stacy but she also will fit Gwen perfectly. This franchise is hungry for greatness. This is the time to rebuild the franchise and they should utilise the villains that weren’t included in the previous films.

I'm generally not excited about the whole SPIDER-MAN reboot, and Garfield doesn't really intrigue me, but Emma is super cute and Rhys is a mind-blowing comedian and I believe he will stole the show in this movie :)

I think the earlier Mary Jane-Kristen Dust more suitable for this role. But lets wait and go to the movies when it come out.

***UPDATE MY FELLOW READERS***

The next villain in the new spidey reboot will be THE LIZARD, and looks like Rhys will play him!

I'm actually not excited at all with this movie, and I'm a Spiderman fan! I read the comics and loved the movie franchise (number 3 is the weakest one though) but I'm against doing a reboot so early.

I'm happy to see the lizard as the villain, he's one charismatic character and the duality between him and Dr Connors could be very interesting to see. The Vulture and Carnage (the Cletus Kassidy version of the character) I would have loved to see as well.

However, I don't think I can get over the fact that we're going back to high school with new actors when i really liked Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in their roles. Since when does a studio reboot a successful franchise just because there's a disagreement with the director? Couldn't they have hired a new one and kept everyone else?

She's definitely hot!
