Ever since the SATC movie was released, cast, production team and fans of the still most watched popular TV show in history, Friends, wondered if they could have the same success SATC had, reuniting Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox-Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt Le-Blanc for the first time since 2004 when the show ended.
Sex and The City and more than a little jealous.
Since then rumours have been continually circulating that a Friends movie would be on the way. Fans then got even more excited when James Michael Tyler who played coffee shop owner Gunther in the Friends TV series stated ‘ ‘Friends: The Movie is definitely on. I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say that they are really keen.’
WENN "What would the story be? We all get together and what? Have coffee? It would be almost sad. It's better to just imagine what those characters are doing now."
Aniston, Cox and Lisa Kudrow have continually expressed interest in a movie and trying to get the shows writers David Crane and Marta Kauffman on board, and more recently interest was happening in a TV thanksgiving special.
However since then gossip and any confirmed word has died down yet again. Still, fans of the show are hopeful and more than enthusiastic - starting up Facebook campaigns, petitions and letters to cast and the production team expressing how much they want to see a reunion.
Though it has tons of interest from some of the cast and millions of fans, where SATC was successful is ultimately where a big adaptation of Friends could prove difficult.
Sex and the City is a kind of one camera focused show, and even on HBO each episode seemed to be a mini movie in itself.
Friends on the other hand is shot using multi cameras in front of a live audience, thus why you hear the laughs from the crowd when they do something funny, so the atmosphere of a movie would be hugely different to the show we all know.
Though Matt Le Blanc would have no idea how the shows storyline could progress is what fans strongly disagree with (myself included), it’s been more than a substantial amount of time since the group of six friends departed on their own adventures and bringing them back together would surely create much story materiel- Where have they been? What have they been doing? Has Joey finally got hitched? Did Ross and Rachel eventually tie the knot for good? Are Monica and Chandler still going strong? Is Phoebe still as insane as ever? The list of questions is endless.
What’s for certain is Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox-Arquette have always been open to the idea and have been trying to come up with a script/idea to pitch to the shows writers, though if a lot more time passes with no more progress on a movie or a one-off episode then it’s no doubt more likely that interest will be forever lost in a reunion.
