Just when you thought it was safe to get back in your dingy!

Hollywood is in remake heaven lately, and 2010 seems to be getting its fair share.
Karate Kid, Nightmare on Elm street, The Crazies, and The Wolfman to name a few.

Piranha is the latest movie to get a reboot/remake, coming to you in what moviemakers just seem to love these days...3D!

Now me personally, I hate 3D, gives me a huge headache, and I don't enjoy sitting in front of a movie looking like something out of spy kids, but I’ll go along with it.

The Synopsis
Lake Victoria, a population of a mere 5000 residents becomes a spring break haven for thousands of students looking for a little more than drinks and an orgy in the water, and this year their gonna get it!
After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must help each other from becoming fish food from these razor-toothed monsters.

Directed by: Alexandre Aja
Starring Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Elisabeth Shue, Jerry OConnell, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, and Kelly Brook.

The 411..

A headache later and now looking a bit more respectable (the 3D specs given straight back to the usher) I have to say I quite enjoyed it!

The key is here, don't expect a masterpiece, a Jaws 'wannabe' maybe, but even that dodgy robotic shark still holds the king of water terror to these little critters!

That aside, the film delivers exactly what it says on the tin, fun, gore, a few scares for the jumpy, comedy, half decent story, thousands of wagging tits for the boys and more than enough biceps to keep the girls ogling for a short while.
The acting is shady in areas but definitely lives up to the over glorified B-movie this was set out to be.
What may excite you a little more is that Richard Dreyfuss's character - Matt Hooper from Jaws seems to have crossed-over to this movie, I say 'seems' as the credits bill him as Matt Boyd, but his character name is never mentioned in the movie, he dresses in the same attire as he does in Jaws, and if that isn’t enough to convince you its Mr Hooper, he sings 'show me the way to go home' just like he did in Jaws! How Sneaky.....love it!!!

The special affects are....well 'special', and overall I would say it was so cheesy you got to love it!
Probably worth an Orange Wednesday BOGOFF deal at the cinema if your going to split the cost with a friend.

What do you think of Remakes in general?

Good question, remakes/reboots done right can be brilliant, look at Batman Begins, although Tim Burtons Original was great, Christopher Nolan brought it back to a successful franchise all over again by giving us a more in depth realism to Batmans psyche and exploring more of a back story. This years Nightmare on elm street reboot/remake failed to deliver us something we already knew and was very much the same as the original. The Superman reboot although many argue it was good failed for the same reason, it was honering the same old thing rather than exploring new areas and promoting it to an audience that was not brought up by the original movies. Also some movies cry out for a remake as technology is so much better now. Steven Speilberg for example, he has expressed interest in a remake of Jaws, the Shark he used in his movie did not work half the time, and with todays tech, he no doubt could do something very new with the story. I like reboots/remakes to bring something new to the story, if its a carbon copy of the original then I can't see the point. Most of the time im in favour of a reboots/remakes, it interests me to see someone else's take on it, however sometimes originals should be left alone, like Halloween, Rom Zombie in my eyes wrecked what John Carpenter made a classic. Thanks for your comment, hope that answered your question

RE: Ali & Seems Appealing

Thanks for your comments. Its amazing just how many people all over the web has such mixed reactions to this movie, especially to the 3D element. I guess its a movie marmite, you either love it or hate it
